DermMetrics brings clinical grade skin elasticity measurement to your fingertips. The first consumer app backed by decades of dermatological research.
Dr. Jean Carruthers, MD, FRCSC, FRC (OPHTH) is the founder of DermMetrics and one of the world's most celebrated ophthalmologists. Co pioneer of cosmetic Botox and founder of Carruthers Instruments, a company dedicated to developing new measuring techniques for cutaneous health. Her scientific legacy is the engine behind everything we build.
The C'est Moi app translates decades of her clinical research into skin elasticity measurement into technology anyone can use at home.
The world's first at home skin elasticity measurement app. Clinical precision meets effortless daily skincare tracking.
Intuitive. Beautiful. Clinically grounded.
The science is the product. Here's what you need to know.
Skin elasticity refers to the skin's ability to stretch and return to its original shape. It is primarily determined by the quantity and quality of collagen and elastin fibres in the dermis the deeper layer of skin beneath the surface.
As we age, our skin produces less collagen and the existing fibres become fragmented. This reduction in elasticity is one of the most measurable biomarkers of skin ageing and now, it can be tracked at home.
Clinically, elasticity has been measured using devices called cutometers instruments that apply controlled suction to the skin and measure the speed and degree of deformation and recovery. These readings produce standardised scores used in research.
The C'est Moi app uses your smartphone camera and proprietary computer vision algorithms developed in partnership with leading dermatologists, including Dr. Jean Carruthers, to replicate this measurement non invasively.
The result is a clinically validated elasticity score you can track daily no equipment needed.
Dr. Jean Carruthers, MD, FRCSC, FRC (OPHTH), is the founder of DermMetrics and one of the most celebrated figures in modern dermatology. Alongside her husband, Dr. Alastair Carruthers, she is globally recognised as the pioneer of cosmetic botulinum toxin the discovery that created the modern Botox industry and transformed the way the world thinks about skin ageing.
Through Carruthers Instruments, her dedicated skin measurement research company, Dr. Carruthers and Dr. Alastair Carruthers have spent years developing and refining new techniques for measuring cutaneous health non invasively. This body of work in elasticity measurement is the direct scientific foundation upon which the C'est Moi app is built.
DermMetrics exists to take that clinical knowledge out of the lab and into the hands of everyone translating decades of research into technology that is accessible, accurate, and designed for everyday life.
A guided capture sequence measures your skin's viscoelastic behaviour across both cheeks, producing a clear, repeatable view of how your skin recovers after deformation.
C'est Moi turns a specialist skin measurement workflow into a simple at home sequence, from setup through longitudinal tracking.
Complete a brief onboarding, grant camera access, and prepare for a guided scan. Your data is handled privately and securely.
Follow on screen instructions as the app captures four sequential cheek scans with clear pinch, twist, and hold prompts.
The SEF™ algorithm processes visible recoil behaviour and converts it into a skin elasticity score that is easy to understand.
Return weekly to compare scores, review trends, and build a longitudinal picture of your skin's changing resilience.
The scan flow is structured to make each session consistent, helping users compare their results over time instead of relying on one off impressions.
The experience is inspired by clinical elasticity assessment principles and translated into an approachable mobile workflow.
DermMetrics Limited was founded by Dr. Jean Carruthers, MD one of the world's most celebrated ophthalmologists to bring clinical grade skin measurement to everyone, everywhere.
At DermMetrics, we develop scientifically grounded technologies that measure and define skin health with precision. Our mission is to create universally accessible, non invasive tools that reveal what lies beneath the surface bringing clarity, consistency, and insight to skin analysis worldwide.
Building on established research and prior innovations in elasticity measurement including the clinical instrumentation work pioneered through Carruthers Instruments, the measurement technology company led by Dr. Jean Carruthers and Dr. Alastair Carruthers we are advancing these principles into scalable, modern solutions designed for real world use. We believe skin health should be measurable for everyone, not just in clinical environments, but anywhere.
Our focus is simple: to transform complex biological signals into meaningful, actionable data making skin elasticity and overall skin health understandable, trackable, and universally comparable.
This is the beginning of our journey into scalable, data driven skin health markets.
MD, FRCSC, FRC (OPHTH) · Clinical Professor, UBC · Pioneer of Cosmetic Dermatology
Founder of DermMetrics · World Renowned Dermatologist & Cosmetic Pioneer
Dr. Jean Carruthers, MD, FRCSC, FRC (OPHTH), is the founder of DermMetrics and one of the most celebrated figures in the history of cosmetic medicine. A Clinical Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of British Columbia, and founder of her own cosmetic practice in Vancouver, her career spans four decades of clinical excellence, research, and global leadership.
Together with her husband, dermatologist Dr. Alastair Carruthers, she revolutionised the cosmetic industry by pioneering the use of botulinum toxin type A better known as Botox as a cosmetic treatment. The story began in 1987, when a patient remarked that her forehead wrinkles improved after injections for a medical condition. That observation led to the very first cosmetic Botox study, published in 1991, and gave rise to what is now the most widely performed cosmetic procedure in the world. As Dr. Carruthers herself says: "I haven't frowned since 1987."
Beyond her landmark discovery, Dr. Carruthers has dedicated significant attention to the quantitative measurement of skin ageing and in particular, skin elasticity as a reproducible, trackable biomarker of cutaneous health. Through Carruthers Instruments, she and Dr. Alastair Carruthers have been developing new measuring techniques for cutaneous health, exploring non invasive methods that form the scientific bedrock of DermMetrics' technology.
She has authored more than 450 peer reviewed publications, 70 book chapters, and 12 textbooks. Her insights have appeared in Vogue, Time, Newsweek, Allure, and The New York Times, and she has delivered more than 380 invited presentations across major international dermatology, ophthalmology, and aesthetic medicine meetings.
Adapted from Dr. Jean D.A. Carruthers' curriculum vitae, this breakdown brings together her academic appointments, landmark discovery, clinical research, publications, textbooks, awards, media presence, and measurement work in a format aligned with DermMetrics.
Premedical studies followed by an MD in Medicine and Surgery at the University of British Columbia.
Primary FRCS and ophthalmology training through the University of London and Moorfields Eye Hospital.
FRCSC in Ophthalmology, followed by specialist qualifications in cosmetic surgery and ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery.
Assistant Professor, UBC Department of Ophthalmology.
Clinical Associate Professor, UBC Department of Ophthalmology.
Clinical Professor, UBC Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences.
In 1987, one of Dr. Carruthers' blepharospasm patients observed that her forehead lines had improved after therapeutic botulinum toxin treatment. Dr. Carruthers shared the observation with her husband, dermatologist Dr. Alastair Carruthers. That moment sparked the first cosmetic Botox study, published in 1991, and helped create what is now the most widely performed cosmetic treatment category in the world.
